New Forest Pubs

The New Forest has many pubs to choose from.  You might have found that some pubs in popular holiday areas try harder than others?  Here are some of our recommendations.

Nearby

The Rising Sun – The Local Pub

The closest.  Only short walk away (left out of the back gate and follow your nose), or a very short drive (right out of the drive and less than a mile).  Standard pub grub but big children’s play area.

The White Buck – Worth the drive or walk

Quite nearby.  Bisterne Close, Burley, BH24 4AT -  01425 402264.  Best pub in Burley by a mile these days.  In reach of a hearty walk or a short drive.  Big place but will be busy in summer. Recently renovated and now feels quite upmarket, but still very New Forest.  Food normally excellent.  Good menu with range of local food.  Large garden with children’s play area.  Directions:

  • Turn right out of the cottage and head for Burley
  • Look for Bisterne Close on the right about a mile before you get to village – if you get to the golf course, you have gone too far
  • Turn into Bisterne Close.  The pub is 200 yards on the left.

The Silver Hind

Station Road, Sway, SO41 6BA.  Sway is the next village.  A short drive or a good walk.  Pub is small.  Restaurant is good.  Particularly good roasts.  Christmas menu was excellent.  Directions

  • Turn left out of the drive
  • After half a mile, turn left onto Middle Road.  Follow it all the way to Sway
  • Turn right into Sway
  • The Silver Hind is in the middle of the village on the right hand side.

The Old Station Tea Rooms Holmsley

Station Road, Homsley, Burley BH24 4HY.  Not really a pub, but not really a restaurant either.  A short drive towards Burley or a fair walk out the back gate and across the forest.  Restaurant is good.  Opens at 10 am.  Particularly good cream teas and brunch. You can then walk or cycle on into Burley along the old railway track.  Directions

  • Turn right out of the cottage and head for Burley
  • Located on the road to Burley at the junction with the A35

The Three Tuns

Ringwood Road, Bransgore.  Food here is consistently way better than average. Good for an evening meal.  Directions:

  • Turn right out of the cottage, then right after the Rising Sun towards the A35
  • Turn left on the A35, and then take the next right
  • After more than a mile, take another right and at the next T junction, yet another right – this is Ringwood Road
  • The Three Tuns is on the left as you enter Bransgore

Further Afield

The Alice Lisle

Rockford, Ringwood, BH24 3NA – 01425 474700

Further away but worth visiting if you’re in Ringwood.  Family-oriented pub in a good setting with lake views.  Good menu.  Large garden.  Directions:

  • Go north out of Ringwood on A338 towards Salisbury
  • Turn right after about 0.75 miles on Ivy Lane
  • At the end of Ivy Lane, turn left and go over a cattle grid
  • The Alice Lisle is on the left set back from the road

The Oak Inn

Pinkney Lane, Bank, near Lyndhurst, SO43 7FD

As New Forest as it gets. Bank is a tiny village just this side of Lyndhurst (so you don’t have to brave Lyndhurst traffic to get there) and the Oak is a very traditional feeling pub with low ceilings, local food and outside seating for the summer.  Great starting or finishing point for a Forest walk or maybe a cycle on mountain bikes to Brockenhurst and back.  Directions:

  • Head for Lyndhurst on the A35
  • A mile before Lyndhurst, turn sharp right into Pinkney’s Lane, signposted Bank
  • The pub is on the right as you enter the village

The Kings Head

Bottom end of Lymington High Street

Busy town pub, traditional pub feel.  Good food, roaring fires.  Ideal after a bit of shopping.

The Mayflower

Near Lymington Yacht Club

Big pub, busy in summer.  Very good garden for eating out.  Wholesome pub style menu.

Testimonial

A wonderful time here! The children loved running around, exploring the New Forest and our son doesn't want to go home now...
